Downloadable eAudiobooks

What Are Downloadable eAudiobooks?

Downloadable eAudiobooks from Recorded Books (hosted by NetLibrary) are digital versions of audiobooks available through the Internet and played on computers and MP3 players.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This service is NOT compatible with the MacIntosh platform, iPods or Zune players at this time. The vendor is researching options for compatibility.

Before You Start...To listen to and/or transfer downloadable audiobooks to your portable device, you need to have Microsoft Windows Media Player, version 9.0 or higher installed on your computer.

How does it work?

Creating an Account...In order to download and listen to audiobooks, you must first create a free NetLibrary account. A valid Thompson Library card is required to do so.

1. Enter your library card number (no spaces) for patron authentication.
2. Click on the Create a Free Account link.
3. Set up your identifying information (user name, password, email address).
4. Click the submit button.

Logging in
1. Click on the NetLibrary link from the Thompson Library website.
2. Put in your library card number (no spaces) for patron authentication.
3. Click the red Log In button on the top of the page. You now have access to all downloadable audiobooks in the Thompson Library’s collection.

Searching for an eAudiobook...Basic Search on the NetLibrary Audiobook Center lets you perform a search by entering terms in a single search field.
1. Enter search term in the Basic Search field.
2. Select keyword, title, author, or narrator.
3. Click search.

Advanced Search lets you construct more complicated searches using multiple search criteria.

Checking Out an eAudiobook...The checkout period for a downloadable audiobook is 21 days. You may check out a maximum of TEN audiobook titles at one time. You must use Microsoft Windows Media Player, version 9.0 or higher to listen to and/or transfer your audiobook to your portable device.
1. Click on the Download this Audiobook link to Open or Save the audiobook file. It is recommended you save the audiobook file to a directory of your choosing on your computer.
2. Select a download option: CD quality or radio quality. CD quality offers high-fidelity playback and should be chosen if you have high speed internet access. Radio quality provides faster download speed for those with dial-up connections.
3. Once the download is complete, you can open the audiobook directly from Windows Media Player.

Transferring an eAudiobook to a Portable Device You can use the media player to transfer a downloaded audiobook to portable devices supporting secure WMA format. NetLibrary automatically transfers a license to your portable device that will allow you to access the audiobook for 21 days from the date of original checkout. For a list of supported portable devices see the Hardware and Software Tips in the NetLibrary Help section.

Please note: The Library staff cannot provide technical support for personal computers or portable listening devices. If you have any problem with your personal computer or MP3 player, please contact the appropriate manufacturer.
